Portfolio Course

The Portfolio Course is designed for post-A Level students wishing to apply for an Art Foundation course, or for direct entry to an Art degree course at a university or art school.

The precise structure of the course is flexible, enabling students to prepare either a general portfolio for a Foundation application, drawing upon all artistic media available, or a more subject-specific portfolio for direct application at degree level. In addition, we also offer a more individual programme for students who wish to explore the creative world for their own satisfaction and development. Areas of study available include Fine Art, Graphics, Printmaking, Textiles, Photography and Contextual Studies.

Portfolio students have the use of all the specialist studio spaces at Fine Arts College in Belsize Park. There is regular assessment, feedback and advice on the choice of colleges or universities, admission procedures, and help in preparing personal statements. As well as guidance regarding the content and presentation of the portfolio, there is also mock interview practice.

The Portfolio programme encourages full use of London’s many museums, galleries and libraries, and can also include an element of contextual study tracing the trends, history, theory and techniques relevant to artists today. Students are encouraged to find their own working practice in the context of today’s art world.

Fine Art

The Fine Art course develops skills in drawing and painting, life-drawing, sketchbooks and journal work, collage and construction, some sculptural methods, and new media.

Graphic Design

Graphic Design and Printmaking involve creating and structuring figurative and non-figurative images, using techniques such as collograph, woodcut, linocut, drypoint, monoprinting, etching, collage, stencilling, painting, drawing and some computer-aided design.

Photography

Photography introduces a broad range of imaging opportunities, including both digital and traditional film. The central emphasis is on contemporary photographic practices in form and content, reflecting current issues and ideas.

Textiles

Textiles is a multi-disciplinary course offering a range of textile design specialisms, including stitch, weave, print and mixed media. Throughout the course there is a strong emphasis on visual research for design and concept development.
