Mathematics and Science

GCSE – Mathematics & Science

At Hampstead Fine Arts College we recognise that an education in Mathematics and Science is fundamental to every student’s development and adult life, whether they go on to work in fashion, film or finance. These disciplines are essential to an understanding of the world around us and provide the tools necessary to solve so many practical questions conjured up by everyday life. Just as importantly, however, study of Mathematics and the sciences allows students to learn the methodology behind logical thinking and problem solving.  Many students will learn the processes involved in conducting experiments and investigations during their GCSE Science course, but this understanding may later be applied to their A-level Psychology course, or to research they conduct for their Sociology thesis at university. Similarly, the rigorous rationality demanded by Mathematics will assist students in their studies far beyond the GCSE, whether that is in deciphering economic formulae, or conceptualising philosophical theorems.

Mathematics

GCSE Maths is a crucial qualification that prepares students for further study and a wide range of careers. It covers topics like number, algebra, geometry, and statistics, helping students develop problem-solving and analytical skills.

What’s Covered?

  • Number: Fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios.
  • Algebra: Equations, inequalities, and sequences.
  • Geometry: Shapes, angles, area, volume, and trigonometry.
  • Statistics: Data handling, averages, probability, and graphs.

Foundation and Higher Tiers

  • Foundation Tier (Grades 1-5): For students seeking a basic understanding of maths.
  • Higher Tier (Grades 4-9): For students aiming for higher grades and further studies in maths or related fields.

Chemistry

GCSE Chemistry provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the science behind the materials and processes that shape our world. This course covers a wide range of topics, from the structure of atoms and the periodic table to chemical reactions, energy changes, and the properties of matter. Students will explore key concepts such as atomic structure, bonding, and the role of different elements in various chemical processes.
