This week’s Enrichment Talk
On Wednesday, Sam Pattinson, co-founder of Treatment Studios, gave a talk to our students about working in the live entertainment industry. Treatment Studio designs and creates stage experiences such as live music tours, festivals, and theatrical productions. Sam showed some extraordinary images and film of stunning staging for performers including Elton John at Glastonbury, Adele in Munich, the Rolling Stones’ SIXTY tour, Dead & Company in Las Vegas and the London and Broadway productions of Prima Facie. He linked these amazing end results with the skills that many of our students are acquiring from their A-levels.
Next week’s Enrichment Talk
Next Wednesday Sandi Roberts will come to College to speak about the video games industry and her combined roles in Cloud Imperium Games as actor, producer and director. Cloud Imperium has just launched the crowd-funded Star Citizen game that now has three million player/collaborators all over the world. Sandi plays a character called Nayara “Pusher” Fell in the game Squadron 42, set in the Star Citizen universe. She will talk about the fast-evolving games industry and her role in performance capture/acting.
Art Trip to Kew Gardens
Next Friday, our Year 10 Art and Photography students will visit Kew Gardens, where they will take photographs and create drawings inspired by the gardens and their surroundings. The trip will provide an opportunity for students to explore different subjects, textures, colours and compositions, gathering ideas and developing work for their Art and Photography courses.
HFA Clubs
We would like to remind you of our many ongoing clubs and activities, which take place during the lunch hour and after College:
Life Drawing
Life Drawing is held in Art Room 1 on Wednesdays 5 – 7pm. This provides an exciting opportunity to record the human body with an intense focus on observation in a mature, purposeful environment. The human body has proved to be an endlessly fascinating subject in art, and the life room gives expression to this.
HFA Band
The College Bands are open to instrumentalists from all year groups, offering students the chance to make music together in a fun and supportive environment. Band members perform music chosen by the students themselves and showcase their talents at various events across the year.
HFA Choir
The College Choir is open to all students across the college and welcomes singers of all experience levels. Members enjoy performing a wide variety of musical styles and take part in performances throughout the year.
Timewarp Club – Retro Gaming
Step back in time to the vibrant world of the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s where arcades lined the streets, punk/new wave ruled, TV only had four channels and friends gathered around the table for epic board game battles. Experience the nostalgia of home consoles, arcade machines, board games, classic TV shows and music that defined a generation.
AV Club, Boxing Club, Dungeons and Dragons, Sustainability Committee, Debating Club, Football and Netball.
All posters are around Centre Studios and Parkhill. Please encourage students to join.
What’s on in London this week
THEATRE
Recommended Show Golden Boy at Almeida Theatre
A superb production of Golden Boy, written in 1937 by Clifford Odets is revived at the Almeida Theatre. Starring Josh O’Connor, Golden Boy tells the story of the struggle faced by a young Italian immigrant forced to choose between a career as a violinist or the more lucrative choice of becoming a boxer. A string quartet plays at key moments from behind a folding screen, dramatically emphasising the emotional dilemma.
O’Connor is passionate and vulnerable as Joe, while Daniel Mays is superb as his manager, Moody. Hayley Squires is Moody’s tough but vulnerable girlfriend, waiting for him to divorce his wife and marry her. She and Joe fall in love with dramatic and tragic consequences.

MUSEUMS & GALLERIES
Recommended Show Golden Boy at Almeida Theatre
This once in a lifetime exhibition is a must-see for everyone (more tickets released in October). The 230-foot-long medieval masterpiece (which is technically an embroidery, not a woven tapestry) brings to life the events leading up to the Norman Conquest, culminating in the death of the English King Harold and the victory of William the Conqueror, the decisive turning point in English history.

AND FINALLY, THE FILM …
De Gaulle Part 1: Resistance & Part 2: Liberte
A magnificent two-part drama of De Gaulle’s war time years with Simon Abkarian as General Charles de Gaulle and Simon Russell Beale as Winston Churchill. Their “wartime double-act” gives the historical drama an engaging, occasionally humorous emotional centre.
We encourage the students to experience as many of these superb events as possible.
