Welcome from Candy & Emmy

Our History of Art Italy trip ended in the beautiful city of Venice. We spent two glorious days in the sunshine, visiting the Accademia Gallery and the churches, S. Zaccaria and S. Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. Here the students talk about what they enjoyed:

“Seeing Bellini’s altarpiece in the San Zaccaria was my favourite moment in Venice. It was good to see the work in the place it was made for” – Isel

“When we arrived in Venice off the train and saw the water and boats for the first time” – Nora

“Making new friends” – Aya

“The coffee and the sunshine!” – Skyla

“Finding so many Renaissance key works that I studied all in one city” – Saskia

“Discovering new details when we looked at the paintings close up in the Accademia” – Edie

“Nothing prepares you for how amazing Venice looks. In photos Venice looks AI. You need to come here to see it’s actually real!” – Kit

Photography Trip to Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol

On Thursday, Sixth Form and Foundation Course students went to Bristol for an inspirational journey into the world of iconic British photographer Martin Parr. The students had the opportunity to view the exhibition, The Last Resort, including both Parr’s black and white and colour photography, along with an exclusive visit to his collector’s library and archive. They saw his in-house printing process and spoke with his assistants, gaining an insight into Martin Parr’s life and work.

Business and Graphics Trip to the Museum of Brands

On Friday, Year 12 Business Studies and Graphics students visited the Museum of Brands in Notting Hill. They completed a Graphic Design workshop, where they were asked to examine how the branding of a well-known product evolved over time. They then forecast cultural changes over the next 20 years and adapted that product’s branding to cater for the future target audience.

Next week, our Year 13 Business Studies and Graphics students will also visit the Museum of Brands.

Next week’s Enrichment Talk

Next week’s talk for Lower Sixth students will be given by Fashion Stylist and Costume Designer, Bukonla Ebiesuwa. Buki has styled and designed for film, TV and advertising, including the thriller film Femme, the superhero TV comedy series, Extraordinary and the recent TV series Malice. Interested students from others years are welcome too.

Cross-curricular talk – Evolution and Genetic Engineering

Next Thursday, Larry, one of our Science tutors, will give a cross-curricular talk on Evolution and Genetic Engineering:

Using genetic engineering, we explore a profound philosophical truth: life survives the unknown not by being perfect, but by being different. We show how cells intentionally scramble their chromosomes to “hedge their bets” against disaster, proving that in an unpredictable world, diversity is nature’s ultimate insurance policy.

Geography Trip to Kings Cross

Next Friday will be the first of two compulsory GCSE field trips. The focus of the investigation will be Urban Regeneration and Geographic Field Skills – in preparation for the examination. Y11 GCSE Geography students should meet at 9 am outside King’s Cross Station beside the Bird Cage (depicted).

Business Insider Trip to Propstore

Also on Friday, Year 12 Business students will visit Propstore as a part of the Fine Arts Business Insider Enterprise Programme. They will be granted access to an incredible and extremely valuable array of used movie/music props, costumes and artwork from stage and screen. Propstore is the busiest and most trusted authority in selling authentic movie props and music memorabilia from your favourite movies and musicians. Students will be given a tour of the business, meet with senior staff who will set them a brief, take part in enterprise skills activities and receive support and guidance from a dedicated mentor – a member of staff from Propstore.

Congratulations to Josh, for his award-winning film
