COLLEGE POLICIES
FIRST AID
In accordance with the guidance outlined in Guidance on first Aid for Schools DCSF
General Guidelines
The health and safety of all pupils in the care of Fine Arts College is of prime concern. The college assumes that all students are fit to attend all timetabled lessons without leaving for medical attention unless otherwise informed by parents. Qualified first aiders are available to give immediate attention in the event of any common accidents or illnesses that occur during college hours.
If a student is too unwell to remain at college the College Administrator must be informed so parents can be notified. Under no circumstance should tutors allow students to leave without following this procedure.
If a GCSE student is unwell, then Anita George must be informed before the parents are called and the child is sent home.
If a student requires serious urgent medical attention the emergency services will be called and parents notified.
School Provision
In accordance with legislation and good practice the college will ensure that:
• Adequate training and guidance is available for first aiders.
• A risk assessment is carried out to ascertain the needs of the college and level of provision needed.
• The necessary equipment and facilities are available along with an appropriate number of qualified first aiders.
• All staff are made aware of first aid arrangements.
• A written record is kept of all serious accidents. A record book is kept in the offices at Centre Studios and 24 Lambolle Place.
School Practice
A first aider must complete an approved course and hold a valid certificate of competence. First aiders must be qualified to give immediate help to casualties with common injuries and illnesses and those arising from specific hazards in college.
Qualified First Aiders are Anita George, Craig Winchcombe, Georgina Aldworth and Laura Smith.
All first aiders are fully indemnified by the college against claims of negligence provided that they are suitably trained and are acting within the scope of their employment and within the college guidelines for the administration of first aid.
A list of qualified first aiders is provided in the offices at Centre Studios and Lambolle Place and on student noticeboards.
First aid facilities and equipment are provided in the staff room at Centre Studios and in the office at Lambolle Place.
One first aider should be nominated as responsible for checking the stock of first aid boxes.
Nominated First Aider: Anita George (Head of GCSE Department)
This policy is reviewed annually and is available for inspection by staff or parents at any time on application to the Principal.
