Sociology is an attempt systematically to study the structure of societies and social behaviour, in order to understand the influence of these wider forces on our social behaviour. When looking at crime, for instance, the sociologist would not be directly interested in the personality of the criminal (of interest to the psychologist) or what the law is and how it operates (of interest to the lawyer) but rather what forces in the wider society have led to changes in the levels of crime, why certain types of crime are higher in certain classes or ethnic groups, and the extent to which measurement of crime (ie the production of criminal stats.) is accurate.
