YOU ARE AT ::: THE 5TH FORM > SUBJECTS > GENERAL SCIENCE

Board: AQA - Specification: 4462

The GCSE Science single award qualification provides a framework in which pupils can understand how science works and affects their lives in an increasingly scientific world. The main outcomes are basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, and biology, but more generally an appreciation of the methodology of scientific development and its role in modern life. Pupils will learn how science reaches and justifies its claims and how to respond critically to information presented in a scientific manner.

The single award also allows students to meet the three disciplines of science gradually and find out which, if any, are attractive to them. It does not preclude pursuing one or more science at A-level, although this would require some dedication. The possibility exists for students to transfer to single GCSEs in Physics, Biology, or Chemistry should they be inspired by the subject. These provide a more rigorous foundation for further study.
